HSSA says to think twice about buying Easter bunnies

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A local animal shelter asks the public to think twice about giving kids a live rabbit for Easter.

Humane Society of Southern Arizona shelter workers have taken in five abandoned bunnies this week and they said they expect more after Easter when the novelty of Easter bunnies starts wearing off, according to a news release.

They said those who really want a rabbit should consider adopting one from them instead of visiting a pet store.

"A rabbit will be with your family long past spring," Public Relations Coordinator Sara Gromley stated. "Many rabbits live 10 years, sometimes longer and will need plenty of care and attention throughout their life. They may be small in size but rabbits are a big responsibility."
