TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Los Dorados Orphan League conducted their 45th annual Good Friday procession up Sentinel Peak, also known as "A" Mountain, Friday afternoon.

For the first time, a Tohono O'Odham spiritual leader offered a blessing.

Now 93-year old David Herrera founded the procession as a way to engage young people in the barrios, or neighborhoods, of Tucson in 1969.

For Christians, the procession commemorates the journey of Jesus as he carried the cross to his crucifixion.

While dozens of people took turns carrying a giant cross up the mountain road, a few hundred others accompanied them.

The cross was erected at the top of Sentinel Peak where a vigil will be kept until Easter Sunday.

There will be a Sunrise Service on Easter. It begins at 6:00 a.m.

Herrera says everyone is invited to participate in the events from Good Friday through Easter.

He says it's not limited to any one denomination.
