TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

University of Arizona officials plan to rename UA Bio Park and announce their new focus for the site.

The name change hasn't been revealed yet.

There are no buildings yet on the 65-acre lot, located near 36th Street & Kino Parkway. Officials say only the infrastructure, including roads, water, and sewer lines are complete. That work was done about six months ago.

Now, officials are moving into the next phase of the project which is to recruit  big-time companies to build on the site. UA Bio Park officials say the reason for the name change is to communicate to companies it is more than just a place for bioscience research.

UA Bio Park is a closer option to the University of Arizona's main campus compared to the UA Tech Park. The Bio Park is expected to house a "live, work, play" environment, which includes research and development facilities,  retail centers, a hotel and conference center, housing, and retail space.

The current vision of the UA Bio Park is to position Tucson and Southern Arizona as a leading center of bio science and biotechnology. The current mission, according to its website https://techparks.arizona.edu/bio-park, is to be one of the foremost scientific and commercial research centers in the U.S. It is also expected to be environmentally and economically sustainable, live and work environment and ultimately provide a number of quality, high-paying jobs.

However getting a company on the site will take some time. The UA's Bio Park CEO is saying it could take two years.

UA officials plan to adopt the new name by May 1 and announce the change to the public and its new focus sometime next month.
