Coconino County approves texting while driving ban

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Motorists heading up to Flagstaff will want to keep their phones in hands-free mode.

Coconino County has approved a new ordinance banning texting while driving that includes making calls or using other devices, like iPads or tablets.

County officials are trying to limit distracted driving, but there are some exceptions. Those using a hands-free device can still make emergency calls to police or hospitals.

The new law takes effect on May 22.

County supervisors said they've been postponing this in hopes that Arizona would pass a statewide law.
