TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Everyday people are doing extraordinary things in the community to help provide a great future for kids and families in Southern Arizona.

Now they are getting a big thanks for all they do.

Davis Bilingual Magnet School is home to the student Mariachi Band 'Las Aguilitas de Davis', and their teacher is up for a big award for his inspiring work with children.

Jaime Valenzuela is one of nearly 20 people nominated for a 'Champions for Children and Families' Award.

According to Child and Family resources hosting the awards event, Valenzuela's hard work teaching students how to play violins, guitars and even sing helps set kids up for success.

"He's a great advocate of children.  He's helping children become strong musicians and he is also taking those groups of kids out of the band and not only helping promote their culture but themselves as strong musicians," said Kate Hiller of Child & Family Resources.

So many great folks up for various awards at this year's Champions for Children and Families award show, including people who help nurse sick children; and even a high school student who volunteers in his free time teaching children karate.

Winners will be announced on Sunday.  Best of luck to everyone nominated.
