2nd SATURDAYS: MEL RIVERS FROM THE ORIGINAL DRIFTERS TO PERFORM AT 4TH ANNIVERSARY

Tucson, AZ, April 30, 2014— Four years ago when some downtown leaders talked about creating an urban music festival it was easy to name it—if it happened the second Saturday of  every single month then the name would be 2nd Saturdays.  Visualizing the success of it was not so easy.  Most people said there would never be more that 800 people to attend on any given Saturday if that many.  Well, from that first event in May 2010 there were approximately 6,000 people on the Congress St. promenade.  That number of consistent attendees grew quickly and stays at around 10,000 to 16,000 every month.

The 2nd Saturdays event for this May is on May 10th and will fill downtown with activity from Toole Ave. to Church Ave starting at 5pm and last until 10:30pm. Most of the fun takes place on Congress St.  Event goers always find street performers, food vendors at booths and in trucks, and live music on the 94.9 MIXfm Stage always located at Scott and Congress.  Music is programmed on that stage from 6-10:30pm. Adding to the birthday celebration at the Stage will be Mel Rivers.  Mel Rivers, formally of The Drifters, 1990-1997, started his career singing on the street corners of Brooklyn in the early '50s during the doo-wop days. Rivers also performed with Seville, traveling nationally and internationally - taking the stage in Germany, France, Belgium, Australia and Holland.  He will perform R&B, soul and classics from 8 -9 p.m. with his band.

Many of the downtown businesses offer specials or their own entertainment.  West Side Rides car club lines 6th Ave. north of Congress with classic cars whose wax and paint draw in the crowd.  The Kids' Area at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum located at 414 N. Toole has interactive fun for the kids and a free movie.  The movie May 10th   will be "The Muppets" (2011) and starts at 6:45pm.  Many of the vendors and sponsors have drawings during the evening and everyone has a chance to win a new Jeep from the Click Automotive Team. The Jeep will be there for you to see. All proceeds from the ticket purchase for the Jeep Giveaway goes to 2nd Saturdays.  You won't win if you don't take a chance.
