2nd Saturdays - special guest to perform for 4th Anniversary

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It was four years ago when event organizers got together and decided to create an urban music festival. The name came easily, according to organizers, if the event happened the second Saturday of the month then 2nd Saturdays it was.

There were those who thought no one would come, that crowds would be lucky to number 800, according to event organizers, but the nay-sayers were wrong.  From the first event in May 2010, in which 6,000 people attended, crowds have consistently increased in number - 10,000 to 15,000 attending in recent months.

The 2nd Saturdays event for this month is May 10, and those crowds will undoubtedly number again in the tens of thousands.  Activities will happen from Toole Ave. to Church Ave. from 5 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.

Most of the fun takes place on Congress St.  Event goers always find street performers, food vendors at booths and in trucks, and live music on the 94.9 MIXfm Stage at Scott and Congress.

Adding to the birthday celebration at the Stage will be Mel Rivers, formally of The Drifters (from 1990-1997) he will be singing R&B, soul and classics with his band on the MIXfm stage.

Many of the downtown businesses offer specials or their own entertainment.  West Side Rides car club lines 6th Ave. north of Congress with classic cars whose wax and paint draw in the crowd.

The Kids' Area at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum (414 N. Toole) has interactive fun for the kids and a free movie.  The movie in May will be "The Muppets"  (2011), beginning at 6:45pm.

Many of the vendors and sponsors have drawings during the evening and everyone has a chance to win a new Jeep from the Click Automotive Team. The Jeep will be there for you to see. All proceeds from the ticket purchase for the Jeep Giveaway goes to 2nd Saturdays.
