TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A 5-year-old is in critical condition after being pulled from the bottom of a pool on the west side, according to Tucson Fire Department Capt. Barrett Baker.

Officials said the mother found the boy at the bottom of the pool in an apartment complex in the 1000 block of W. Saint Mary's Road and dove in to get him. It was unknown how long the child was under water.

Bystanders reportedly heard screaming, jumped the fence and performed CPR on the child.

The boy was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Baker said.

Fire officials remind the public of the "ABCs" of pool safety, including:

Active Adult Supervision is the first and most important part.  Watch children at all times around water.

Barriers: Have a fence that encloses the pool or spa and make sure the gates are self-closing and self-latching.

Classes: CPR for Adults and age appropriate swim lessons for the children.  Knowing CPR enables the parent to be a first responder.
