TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

For many hospitals, patients and their family's safety and care are important.  But where do the Southern Arizona hospitals rank when it comes to those two issues?

The Leap-Frog Group released its 3rd annual spring hospital safety scores, they will also release one in the fall. The one thing to keep in mind, this is just one of several hospital surveys out there.

Arizona ranked 29 out of 50, with nine hospitals in the state receiving an 'A' ranking, however, none of those were hospitals in Southern Arizona.

The top five states that scored the highest total of 'A' grade hospitals, according to the Leap-Frog survey were - Maine, with 74 percent of its hospitals with an 'A' grading. The top five round off with Massachusetts, South Dakota, Illinois and Hawaii.

Hospital safety scores were calculated by top patient safety experts and peer-reviewed, according to Leap-Frog.  The hospitals each received a grade of A, B, C, D or F.

There were more than 2,500 hospitals reviewed nationwide, using their ability to prevent errors, injuries and infections, as basis for the scores.

The Leap-Frog Group says the data shows that there has been a ten percent increase or higher in hospital performance since the study started in 2012.
