NEW YORK (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Saints picked up wide receiver Brandin Cooks in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by trading up with Arizona.

Coach Sean Payton said the rookie from Oregon State is a star both on and off the field.

"You interview 75-80 at the combine," head coach Sean Payton told FOX Sports. "As you go through the process when you're reading the board and putting names up, if there is discussion with regards to a player, you might say 'Let's use up one of our visits and get this guy in here.' Brandin was a player where there really wasn't the type of discussion. It was pretty clear as to how he interviewed, how we felt about him."

Cooks' father died when he was six years old. His mother, Andrea raised Cooks and his three brothers by working two different jobs.

Cooks ran the fastest 40-yard dash at this year's combine while wearing Adidas shoes. Adidas awarded him $100,000 for the feat.

Instead of buying something for himself, Cooks bought his mother a brand new Mercedes-Benz to replace her 15-year-old car.
