Tucson higher than national average for bicycle commuters

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

More people today across the U.S. are biking to work.

According to a report recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of people in America who bike to work increased about 60 percent over the last decade.

Census Bureau officials say cities can use the date to measure if infrastructure investments made in bike paths and pedestrian safety over the last 10 years are making a difference.

Here are the current numbers from the Census Bureau report:

2.4 percent of the working population in Tucson commutes to work on their bicycles. While that number has not changed over the last decade, it's four times more than the national average, which is only 0.6 percent.

Tucson tied for the ninth with Oakland, California for the highest percentage of workers using a bike to get to work.
