Reminder to homeowners, buy flood insurance prior to monsoon

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A FEMA representative will meet at The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors this morning at 8:30 a.m.  It was requested by the residents to get information about flood insurance.

For those who have a homeowner's insurance policy, they generally do not cover flood damage from natural causes, like monsoon flash floods.

Flood insurance is required for homes purchased with federally backed mortgages and for houses located in the FEMA 100 year flood plains.

However, homeowners could still be at risk even if they are outside the 100 year flood plain. Flood insurance should be essential for homeowners who live near a wash, which could possibly overflow after a heavy downpour.

As an added initiative for house owners, buying flood insurance outside of the 100 year flood plain is generally discounted.

One thing to policy buyers should remember, there is a 30 day waiting period after purchase.  For those who buy flood insurance this week, it will kick in just in time for the monsoon.
