Camp stove ignites brush fire in Yavapai County

PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

A Phoenix man was cited after his camp stove erupted in flames and started a wildland fire north of Hillside in Yavapai County on Thursday afternoon.

The 62-year-old man, whose name was not released, told Yavapai County sheriff's deputies he put the stove on the bumper of his Jeep and started a fire in it to cook a meal about 2 p.m.

He said the stove "exploded" and he reacted by knocking it off the bumper onto the ground, a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

The burning stove ignited nearby brush and spread quickly, consuming about 15 acres before it was controlled by the Arizona State Fire agency, and fire departments from Bagdad and Skull Valley, the spokesman said.

Deputies said the man stayed at the scene and was fully cooperative.

He was cited for reckless burning and violating a county fire ban with an open flame.

No buildings were damaged, no evacuations were necessary and no one was hurt during the fire.
