SOUTH TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A mile and a half from the scene of an early morning murder investigation, the community of South Tucson rallies Saturday to stop the violence.

Organizers John Teran and Leticia Ortiz said families are encouraged to join in the event at the heart of the city to show they won't stand for violence.

"It's pretty bad," said Teran. "We're trying to bring something positive to the city."

"We want businesses and everyone to know that South Tucson is safe," Ortiz added.

Local businesses, community organizations and youth groups set up along South 5th Avenue. Edward Sanchez with Gospel Rescue Mission said it's important to engage families and let them know the resources that are available to them.

"We all should come together, spend time together," he said. "Do events like this to help the community, to strengthen the community."

Sanchez said it's not solely a South Tucson issue, but an effort that needs support from everyone in the Old Pueblo.

"We need a strong foundation to protect our children," he said.

Saturday's event is the second annual Stop the Violence day in South Tucson.
