Oops! Taxpayers in France on the hook for new trains that 'don't fit' stations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

TODAY'S MOST... Expensive Mistake: The national transit company in France just ordered new trains that don't fit in many of the stations around the country. It will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars to fix the problem.

The brand new bullet trains are about 3 centimeters too wide for many of the old platforms. There are almost 9,000 train stations in France, and some, particularly in the countryside, are more than 50 years old.

Those old platforms are the ones that will need to be shaved. The transit company reportedly spent about $50 million already to start fixing the stations. When all is said and done, it will probably end up costing the country over $100 million to widen all of the 1,300 stations that are too narrow.

A spokesman for the train company admitted, "We discovered the problem a little late," and the French transportation minister described the situation as "comically tragic."
