Too many missed chances with runners in scoring position meant a missed chance for the Reds to clinch a series win against the Cardinals Saturday night at Great American Ball Park.
Saint Louis tagged Reds starter Tony Cingrani for four earned runs, but the Reds stranded runners on second base in three of the final four innings.
"It just didn't work out for us," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "Just not able to take advantage of those situations."
Cardinals catcher Yadi Molina hit his third home run off Reds pitching this season helping St. Louis even the weekend series with the Reds.
The Reds will need to beat Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright on Sunday night to beat the Cardinals in a series for just the second time in its last 11 tries.
"I'm not worried about our guys and how they bounce back," said Price. "They're into it. The games are important and they play them like they're important. We just haven't been able to string a collection of wins together and feel like we haven't gotten rolling. We've been able to tread water, but we need to start to push and need to start collecting some victories here."
The Reds are now 22-25 on the season.
