TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is hosting the "Precious, Not Parents" campaign, offering $20 spay and neuter surgeries for any puppy or kitten younger than six months.

The special rate of $20 is less than the HSSA's normal low cost that usually runs $65 or more depending on the size of the pet.

The campaign is funded by PetSmart Charities who have provided thousands of dollars to spay/neuter clinics around the nation to fund affordable and high-quality spay and neuter surgeries for more than 12,000 puppies and kittens during the month of June.

Spaying and neutering is safe for kittens and pups as young as eight to 10 weeks old according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Samantha Esquivel, HSSA Public Relations lead, said, "While we think they are still babies, kittens as young as four months and puppies as young as five months are still old enough to get pregnant and have their first litter just two months later."
