LANGLEY, VA (CNN) - The White House accidentally revealed the name of a high-ranking CIA official to thousands of journalists.

The leak happened over the weekend while President Obama visited troops in Afghanistan.

A White House staffer provided a list of people who attended a military briefing with the president.

That list included the name of the top CIA official based in Afghanistan.

The error was revealed when a Washington Post reporter questioned officials about an unfamiliar name on the list.

A revised list was later provided to the news media, without the agent's name included.

Neither the White House nor the CIA have publicly commented on the matter.

The identities of CIA station chiefs are usually kept private, to protect the agents and allow them to operate secretly.
