Sierra Vista considers options to reduce plastic bag waste

Posted: Updated:
SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Plastic bag waste is reaching a point where Sierra Vista is asking people whether the town should ban the bags, as nearby Bisbee has done, or charge shoppers for the bags.

Sierra Vista's Environmental Affairs Commission is inviting people to share their thoughts at www.SpeakUpSierraVista.com.

Many people recycle plastic bags, and others shop with re-usable tote bags.  But many bags end up in landfills, or as litter.  At least 100 billion single use plastic bags make it into the hands of American shoppers each year, costing retailers about $4 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
