City pools opening for 2014 summer season

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson's city pools are opening today for the summer season. It is not only an opportunity to cool down, but a chance to teach children water safety.

El Pueblo Pool is just one of 18 city pools opening later today, it is also a place where parents can sign up their children for swim lessons.

The Red Cross offers a chance to learn to swim in a two week session that teaches children as young as six months how to get familiar with water. This is done through exercises like blowing bubbles under water for breath control, opening their eyes under water so they can see and grab objects.

Drowning prevention is not only watching children around water, but also giving them the skills they need if they get into a water emergency.

Parents can register their children at any of the city's pools.

Keeping these pools open and keeping children safe around water also costs money, so the city is asking for the public's help.  The city currently has enough money to keep the pools open this season, but due to budget issues they are asking for sponsors for next season. If sponsoring a pool is over the budget, perhaps a donation of $15 is more doable - this could pay for one child to receive swim lessons.

For more information on how to register for those swim lessons go online to http://parks.tucsonaz.gov/parks/aquatics#lessons

Most pools will open today around noon or 1 p.m.
