Record breaking heat could be on the way

Posted: Updated:

We have seen a few days at or above 100° already this year and as we enter the hottest time of the year we will only increase the count so far. As of Friday, May 30th, Tucson has seen six days at 100° or hotter. With a hot weekend in store we should easily add two more dates and with a hotter work week ahead of us we will easily increase that 100° count into the double digits.

Next week we could be dealing with record breaking temperatures in southern Arizona as our mercury will heat up to around 110° on spots. Tucson has a forecast high of 105° on Monday and 106° on Tuesday. Neither one of those numbers are record highs but are extremely close. The record high on both dates is 107° with Monday's back in 2013 (last year) and Tuesday's in 1996.

We average 62 days a year at or above 100° with the 10 year average sitting at 65. The most we have seen was back in 1994 with 99 days at or above 100 and the least was back in 1967 with only 21 days.
