Hackers target officials through fake social media sites

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now/AP) -

A cyber intelligence report finds that Iranian hackers have targeted U.S. military and political leaders through false social networking sites and a fake website.

The hackers create identities as journalists and over time they formed relationships and built credibility, all to lure a target to a fake website, where they steal passwords and other credentials, according to officials.

The report found more than 2,000 connections made by hackers over the past three years, including a four-star U.S. admiral, British and Saudi officials, journalists and lawmakers.

None of them were named.

They appeared to be after National Security Intelligence, but what information the hackers took is unclear.
