LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Pastor Donald Clay and members of his congregation thought the Thorntons on Cane Run Road would be a good place to stop for snacks on their way back to Lexington Saturday night. He and the children with him never expected what they saw.
"We heard two shots, and that's when people started ducking," Clay said.
"They appear to be husband and wife," according to Louisville Metro Police Department Public Information Officer Dwight Mitchell. "[He] came up behind her, they exchanged some type of words at that point. Apparently, he pulls out a gun and shoots her."
And then himself. The man was taken to University of Louisville Hospital where he died of his wound several hours later.
"We tried to help him out," Clay said, "but he was still shaking."
"She didn't have a chance," said Evonne Paul. "I mean, that was all she wrote."
Paul couldn't help but hear the gunfire. Thorntons is right out her front door in the Pioneer Mobile Home Park.
"They was a whole group of people saying, 'Get back! Get back!" Paul said.
Police have not speculated why the couple wound up at a gas station far from where they lived. They arrived in separate cars. It's not clear whether the woman's husband found her there or followed her.
Pastor Clay saw both of them, but never expected it to end in violence.
"She was just in and out of the store, talking on a cell phone. He was mumbling on the phone," Clay said. "They checked out right before we did, so we didn't see any arguments."
But Clay and several children in his congregation saw the gunfire and its aftermath.
"Very emotional night for us," Clay said. "Very sad for the family. Our prayers is with the family. Don't know who the victim is, but our prayers and thoughts go out to the family."
The identities of the deceased have not been released.
