Crews working to contain Grand Canyon wildfire

Grand Canyon National Park officials say weather conditions are challenging firefighters working to contain a lightning-caused wildfire that's been burning on the north rim.

Crews spent Saturday maintaining containment lines and putting out spot fires around the 2.4-square-mile Galahad Fire. But firefighters say they weren't able to conduct more burnout operations.

The fire started May 23 on the Walla Valley Peninsula, which is located west of the north rim village.

Officials have been letting the blaze burn to return fire to the ecosystem in order to maintain forest health.

The fire is burning in forest and it's about a mile from a historic cabin on the peninsula.
The Park Service says smoke is visible north of the park in Fredonia and from the canyon's south rim.
