TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A national contest to help Pima Animal Care Center win $100,000 kicks off today.

PACC is one of fifty shelters in the nation competing to find homes for 5,000 pets by August 31st.

"There's a huge issue. So we are the communities only open mission shelter which means we take in every animal who comes through our doors because we want to help them all. Last year, we took in 24,000 homeless pets so there's a huge need for people to come out and adopt," said Karen Hollish with PACC.

The group had a free adoption event this morning.
