PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) recalled infielder Didi Gregorius from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Gregorius, 24, was hitting .310 (70-for-226) with 14 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 25 RBI and 42 runs scored in 57 games with the Aces this season (38 games at second base and 19 at shortstop). At the time of his promotion, he ranked among Pacific Coast League Leaders in runs scored (T-2nd), hits (3rd), games played (3rd) and triples (T-3rd). Over his last 15 games, Gregorius led the PCL with 25 hits, batting .373 during that time.

He made his first Opening Day roster this season, appearing in 2 games with the D-backs during the Opening Series in Sydney, Australia before being optioned to Reno on March 29. In three Major League seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2012) and D-backs (2013-14), Gregorius is a career .252 hitter (96-for-381) with 16 doubles, 7 home runs, 30 RBI and 48 runs scored.

A native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Gregorius was acquired by the D-backs as part of a 3-team trade with the Cleveland Indians and Reds on Dec. 10, 2012. He entered the 2013 season ranked among Arizona's top prospects by MLB.com (No. 3) and Baseball America (No. 5).

Pennington, 29, suffered the hand injury during a tag attempt of Everth Cabrera in the first inning on May 27 vs. Padres. In 33 games with the D-backs this season, he hit .243 (18-for-74) with 4 doubles, a triple, 6 RBI and 6 runs scored.
