New Sunnyside board sworn in, appoints interim Superintendent

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Two newly elected school board members were sworn in at their first board meeting on Tuesday night.

Eric Giffin and Rebecca "Beki" Quintero took the oath of office among a festive crowd who clapped and cheered.

Giffin and Quintero both won the special recall election two weeks ago, and ousted long time board member Louie Gonzales and Bobby Garcia, both of whom voted in favor or extending school superintendent Dr. Manuel Isquierdo's contract.

The newly elected board members ran on a platform of replacing Isquierdo.

After the swearing in ceremony, the first order of business was to appoint an interim superintendent for the district.  The old board voted 3-2 during an almost 7-hour meeting last night to buy out Isquierdo's contract for $499,500.

Board members went into executive session for about two hours.  They had a short list of three candidates.

Assistant Superintendent of student services Dr. Eugenia Favela was named as the Assistant Superintendent of the district.

Dr. Favela has been in the Sunnyside district for 29 years.  She has a background in special education, and is from Nogales, Arizona.  Dr. Favela said she was humbled and honored to be given this challenging task, and looked forward to moving forward and helping the district heal from all of the dissent and tension over the last few months.

Favela said it was important to show our children how government is run by being good role models, the art of debating and disagreeing without getting nasty.

School officials said Dr. Favela's salary would be bumped from $100,000 to $125,000 in this new role.

The search for a new superintendent will begin soon.  Dr. Favela said she wanted to try the job on for size before deciding whether she wanted to throw her hat in the ring.

Dr. Isquierdo's last day at work is Friday.  He planned to work from home during the month of June.
