AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Family and friends gathered to pay their respects to a man who died drowned while trying to save someone else's.

The funeral service for 43-year-old Peter Radke was held on Saturday, June 7, at the Grace Church located at 754 Ghent Road in Akron.

He was buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina.

On Saturday, May 31, Radke lost his life at Huntington Beach trying to save a teenage girl who was in trouble in the water.

Somehow Radke went under during his attempt to help her.

The Bay Village Fire Department was called to the beach for assistance but what started as a rescue effort turned into a recovery mission when his body was pulled from the water.

Authorities praised Radke for his selfless act.

The young woman Radke went into the water to help was treated and released from the hospital.

Radke's wife, Michelle, and their children are grateful for all of the community's support and prayers.

If anyone would like to make a donation to benefit the Radke Family, you can do so at www.peteradkefund.com or http://www.gofundme.com/9ri7rs.

The Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department and Detectives Unit are in the process of investigating to determine exactly what happened.
