TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona baseball players Trent Gilbert and Tyler Parmenter were each selected on the final day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, giving the Wildcats three draftees in this year's draft.

Gilbert, a junior infielder, was selected with the 462nd overall pick in the 15th round by the Oakland Athletics. Parmenter, a junior pitcher, was chosen with the 635th selection in the 21st round by the Cincinnati Reds.

A native of Torrance, Calif., Gilbert proved to be one of the Pac-12's most consistent hitters over the last several seasons while missing only one career game and totaling 174 career starts for the Wildcats. He was the starting second baseman on the 2012 national championship, batting .272 with 42 runs batted in. Gilbert improved his batting average to .344 as a sophomore and backed it up with a .324 clip this past season. As a junior, he tied for the Pac-12 lead with 73 base hits during the regular season, pushing his career tally to 213. He also scored 117 runs and batted in 130 runs over three seasons. Additionally, Gilbert was named an honorable mention selection to the Pac-12 All-Academic team this spring. He was initially drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 40th Round of the 2011 draft out of Torrance High School.

A native of Yuma, Ariz., Parmenter made the switch from position player to pitcher this season for the Wildcats. The right-hander, who played in 20 games with 14 starts over his first two seasons as a .250 hitter, led the club with 27 appeareances out of the bullpen this past season. He turned in an 0-2 record with a 4.91 ERA, while racking up 24 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched. Parmenter pitched in 11 Pac-12 Conference games this season, earning a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 15th Round of the 2011 draft out of Cibola High School.

Senior James Farris was selected on Friday by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round with the 259th overall pick. The right-handed pitcher improved six rounds from last year's draft (15th round choice of the Houston Astros) by returning for his senior year, in which he racked up 100 strikeouts to finish second in the Pac-12.

The 2012 national championship team produced 13 MLB draft picks over the last three seasons, including Farris, Gilbert and Parmenter.
