Police ID bicyclist killed in Phoenix tractor-trailer accident

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A bicyclist is dead after the man fell into a Phoenix roadway and struck the side of a tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Rubin Pina Herrera, 57, was on a sidewalk near Buckeye Road and 24th Avenue at about 4 p.m.

The man swerved to avoid striking a telephone pole, lost control of the bicycle, fell into the roadway and struck the side of the truck that had been traveling west on Buckeye in the curb lane, said Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes.

Herrera suffered serious head trauma and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver remained on the scene and he showed no signs of impairment, Holmes said.

The Phoenix Police Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
