Man who took sanctuary in church gets a work permit

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) – A man who faced deportation says immigration officials will allow him to stay in the U.S. for at least a year.

Daniel Ruiz, who took sanctuary at a church last month, says ICE gave him a stay of deportation, which means he doesn't have to leave the U.S. and can get a work permit.

Ruiz and his family will meet with media at the Southside Presbyterian church Tuesday at noon. It's the same church where he took sanctuary to avoid deportation.

He says his immigration status came into question during a traffic stop.

Ruiz slept at the church for weeks because he didn't believe immigration officials would let him stay during this process.

If deported, it would break his family apart. He'd have to leave his teenage son.

The stay of deportation is something Ruiz tried to get before, but was denied twice.

We're told he's back with his family this morning.
