By Kate Flexer - Duke Energy is warning customers about a recent fraudulent billing scam that has taken money from a number of customers.
According to the company, several customers have received phone calls from individuals who claim to be Duke Energy representatives. These "representatives" demand that payment be made within an hour of the call to avoid service disconnection.
Customers are then told to buy a pre-paid debit card or to arrange a cash payment. The thief then drains the debit card after the account information is provided, Duke Energy representatives say.
The scammers are using disposable cell phones to contact the victims, and Duke Energy says it makes for a difficult search for local authorities.
They have reportedly adopted new tactics like using caller ID spoofing to replicate Duke Energy's customer service number or falsely claiming to be a part of a third party collection agency representing the company.
Duke Energy is asking customers to report any suspicious phone calls to local authorities.
