Look for a construction roadblock on Valencia Road this week

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Travelers will reach a roadblock on Valencia Road Tuesday and Wednesday, as construction crews start a bridge extension in the area.

The Pima County Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Authority and their contractor KE&G Construction will install girders on the Valencia Road bridge, which runs over Union Pacific railroad tracks.

A girder is one of the main parts of a bridge's support system.

On Tuesday, June 17, crews will begin work on the south side of the bridge. This will directly delay the eastbound lanes of Valencia, headed towards Wilmot Road.

Then, on Wednesday, construction will shift over to the north side. Traffic will in turn be detoured to the south side of the roadway, while the girders are put in place.

All work will take place between 5:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The main construction should happen on the Valencia bridge, but work will span on Valencia Road from Alvernon Way to Wilmot Road.

The speed limit in this construction zone is 25 miles per hour. Always slow down in work zones and watch for people and equipment in the area.
