Rescue dog leading 2014 World's Ugliest Dog contest voting

PETALUMA, CA (WWBT) -

A rescue dog named Peanut who spent nine months at an animal hospital is leading the voting in the 2014 World's Ugliest Dog contest.

The online voting ends Thursday at 10 p.m., with Peanut getting nearly double the number of votes of his nearest competition, but the online vote is only for fun with the real winner crowned Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

The 26th annual contest features nearly two dozen contestants coming from as far away as Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and New Mexico.

Last year's winner, Walle, was the crowd favorite with his huge head, hump back and duck waddle.  Judge Brian Sobel claimed Walle, a mutt mix of beagle, basset and boxer, looked as though he had been Photoshopped from a variety of dogs.

The fair will also hold a Beauty and the Beast Walk with dogs up for adoption from the Sonoma Humane Society's Pet Waggin'. A large number of the contestants have been rescued from animal shelters across the country.

The winner of the competition receives $1,500 in prize money with awards for placing in the Pedigree and Mutt classes.
