Texting while driving top risky behavior for teens

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) –The top two risky behaviors for teens used to be smoking cigarettes or drunk driving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, texting and driving is at the top now.

The CDC says over 40 percent of the teens they surveyed reported that they had texted or emailed while driving. This is despite the commercials that show the dangers of texting and driving, and many cities like Tucson that have a ban on texting and driving.

AAA Arizona says summer time is the most deadly time of year for teen drivers. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, from 2007 to 2012, 218 teens were killed on Arizona roadways.

In 2013, 11 drivers had charges filed against them for texting and driving in the City of Tucson.

One of those charges was for causing an accident. So far in 2014, there have been 9 charges filed for texting and driving in Tucson, and one of the charges was for causing an accident.

A citation for texting can be costly--150 dollars plus other fees.
