The Reds made another minor league exchange on Saturday designating outfielder Roger Bernadina for assignment and recalling right-handed pitcher Carlos Contreras from AA Pensacola. Bernadina has struggled in 44 games for Cincinnati this season with a batting average of 153.
The decision to call up Contreras comes in desperate times for an overworked and seemingly worn out bullpen. Contreras has pitched in nine games this season for Pensacola and started three times. Contreras went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings of work for the Blue Wahoos.
Contreras will be the third Reds player this season to make his major league debut if and when he takes the mound. The Reds look to rebound at 4:10 p.m. Saturday against Toronto after giving up an 8-0 lead Friday in an eventual 14-9 loss at Great American Ball Park.
