TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The University of Arizona and Sun Link are offering UA students and staff free, 30-day passes to ride the modern streetcar from August 15 to September 14.

Tucson's Department of Transportation Deputy Director Carlos DeLeon said the promotion is an incentive to get more UA students and staff to ride the streetcar upon its launch on July 25.

Research has shown up to 3,000 UA students currently use the U-Pass SunGO, a discounted transit pass for UA students and faculty taking the city bus, shuttle and streetcar when it opens. DeLeon said the hope is to double that ridership to 6,000 by way of offering the free streetcar trial.

New students arriving to campus this August are also being targeted, as trip habits are established early on, DeLeon said.

But free rides may not be the only incentive to get students on-board.

"It really depends on where I'm trying to be. If the route is in line with where I want to go, then definitely. If not, probably not," said UA Junior Michael Strong.

The streetcar free ride trial is currently not offered to businesses downtown or to Pima Community College.

Riding the streetcar will be free to public during its first three days of operation on July 25, 26 and 27.

More information on the free trial can be found here: https://parking.arizona.edu/Streetcar/RideSunLinkFree/
