TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Red Cross is asking the public to step up and donate blood this summer.  There is no down season for donations, but summer generally has a shortage, the Red Cross is hoping to avoid this.

While all blood types are requested, there is a need for negative types - O, A and B.  O negative is considered the universal donor and can be given to anyone regardless of blood type.  Types A and B negative can be given to those who are RH positive or negative, and they are the types most in demand and the first to run out when there is a shortage.

As an added bonus those who donate from now until July 7 will receive a commemorative Red Cross t-shirt (while supplies last).

The Red Cross must collect more than 15,000 donations a day in order to keep up with the demands at the 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the U.S.

To see the list of requirements and to make a donation appointment,  please go online to www.redcrossblood.org or call (800)733-2767.
