TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - A Tucson-based nonprofit agency dedicated to helping Pima County kids in state care will break ground a new outdoor visit center.

Aviva Children’s Services is located on Plumer Ave. near Broadway & Campbell in Midtown.

The groundbreaking ceremony started at 8 a.m. in a dirt lot next to the current building.

Aviva Executive Director, Bob Heslinga says the new park-like facility will be more than just a playground.

He says it’ll be a safe and secure place dedicated to helping facilitate court-ordered visits with children and their parents. The playground will provide another option, besides the indoor facility for families and children to interact.

Heslinga adds the value of playing in a positive environment can be therapeutic and help with the healing process.

The new outdoor visit center is expected to host 20 percent more visits, allowing more children and families to reunite with supervision.

Aviva serves more than 3,500 children in foster care in Pima County.

The estimated total cost of the new 11,000 square foot outdoor visit center is $425,000. Part of it is paid for by a grant from Angel Charity.

Construction is expected to be finished by December of this year.

Today, I’m simply asking you – what do YOU think people here in southern Arizona should think about? I can’t guarantee I’ll talk about every single one of them, but I will promise to consider ALL your ideas.
