BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A member of the Montford Point Marines, America's first group of African-Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps, was honored today with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Congresswoman Terri Sewell presented the medal to WWII veteran James Carrington for his service.

"It is indeed a privilege to present this deserving honor to Mr. Carrington for his bravery and courage as a trailblazer in the United States Marine Corps," Sewell said. "We must never forget the sacrifices of those that have paved the way for myself and many others."

Congress approved the award on November 11, 2011. The marine unit received the gold medal as a group during a ceremony held at the U.S. Capitol in June 2012.

Members of Congress, like Sewell, will present bronze replicas of the medal to Montford Point Marines in their district.

More than 20,000 men were trained at the segregated Camp Montford Point in North Carolina from 1942 to 1949.
