3 caught stealing gas from Oak Harbor Golf Club

OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Three men are facing charges after Ottawa County sheriff's deputies caught them stealing gas from the Oak Harbor Golf Club.

Employees say the golf club keeps its own gasoline supply on-site to fill up golf carts. When 46-year-old Robert McClanahan, 20-year-old Cody Brengartner – both of Port Clinton - and an unnamed 16-year-old accomplice learned of the gas supply, they decided to take advantage of it.

Club employees reported the lock to their gas supply was cut off, so deputies staked out the area Sunday night. Around 1 a.m. Monday morning, deputies saw the three men walking through the property with 10 five-gallon gas cans. The undercover deputies caught the men trying to siphon gas from a tank.

The deputies, who couldn't reveal their identities, say the men even admitted to why they stole it.

"They were taking the gasoline that they were getting, and putting it on their boats so that they could go out and go fishing," a deputy said. "Obviously, with fuel being $3.65 a gallon, you start doing that multiple times and going out there, it gets expensive."

The deputies suspect the men may have been stealing gas for a couple of months. They're investigating if the same suspects are behind a recent gasoline theft at the county fairgrounds.

Both McClanahan and Brengartner are charged with trespassing, theft, and possession of criminal tools. With a minor involved, deputies say more charges are pending.
