(WSYR/WJR/CNN) – Five people died Tuesday on the East Coast during severe storms.

Four people died when four homes collapsed in Madison County, NY, outside of Syracuse, during a severe storm on Tuesday evening. Several other buildings were damaged.

The sheriff says 60 people were involved in a search effort - and crews plan to continue searching Wednesday.

"We're starting with each home,” Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley said. “We're trying to talk to the neighbors, if any are here to see if anybody was home at the time, who lives there, how many people may be in the home. We've got our search dogs out here right now looking around. We're just picking up parts of the house to look to see if anybody's underneath them."

One child was killed and eight others hurt when severe weather toppled a tree at a camp in Carroll County, MD.

Camp director Jon Bissett says the storm moved in quickly.

"Something like this has never happened in our history. It was a freak storm that came up," he said. "Unfortunately, this is what happened."

Fire crews say nearly 114 campers were outside when the storms blew through.
