His sister, Kaley Pleban, said he decided to have a below-the-knee amputation on his left foot, the only place where the disease was hindering him."He opted to have the amputation because he had been fighting a very rare bone/joint disease called PVNS, which is essentially recurring benign tumors in his ankle. He got his first radiation treatment at 21 years old," Kaley Pleban wrote on Reddit on July 7.
Joe had the surgery two weeks ago at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.Shortly after posting the photos on Reddit's /r/pics page, Joe's story shot up to the top of Reddit's front page. The fast response even prompted him to have his own ?Reddit AMA on July 7 under his screen name rightfooted?.
Joe also told redditors that he hopes to get back to snowboarding and wants to look into the Paralympics. After his AMA, some redditors began crowdsourcing on Crowdtilt for Joe to have a custom designed prosthetic cover. So far, they've raised more than $1,700, with a goal of $2,000.
