(CNN) - The Japan Meteorological Agency said a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit early Saturday on the Pacific coast of Tohoku, a region of northern Japan.

A tsunami warning that JMA had initially issued was canceled in its aftermath.

The U.S. Geological Survey later downgraded the earthquake to 6.5 magnitude. It occurred seven miles deep off Honshu Island, 284 miles east-northeast of Tokyo.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake that hit in early March 2011 was the largest ever to hit Japan and fourth-largest on record. It produced 30-foot waves in a tsunami that devastated areas of the country and caused a nuclear crisis at a power plant in northern Honshu.
