DENVER, CO (KUSA/CNN) - One person is dead and seven others are injured after a vicious storm hits Colorado.

Authorities say numerous bolts of lightning struck in the Rocky Mountain National Park area.

Dr. Martin Koschnitzke, with the Estes Park Medical Center, says hikers apparently were at a high point of the park when conditions were getting rough.

"We can't emphasize enough that when it starts getting dark and clouds are forming, it's time to get down and my understanding is that this group was in the process of doing that and still got caught, which is really a sad thing," Koschnitzke said.

Four of the victims have been released.

The three others are in stable condition.
