Group wants Vietnam Vets memorial in Gilbert

Posted: Updated:

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - A veterans group is proposing that a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. be built in Gilbert.

The Arizona Republic reported (http://bit.ly/U7NX4S) Saturday that Operation Welcome Home in Gilbert is looking into what it would take to erect a scaled down version of the memorial known as "the wall."

Group members recently began discussions with the Gilbert Town Council as well as the city's Parks and Recreation department.

The original memorial, which is on the National Mall, is comprised of long black granite walls engraved with the names of U.S. servicemen and women who died in the Vietnam War.

It opened in 1982.

One replica of the wall is located in Oklahoma. It was permanently installed there after serving as a traveling display.
