Preservationists attempt to save Phoenix building

PHOENIX (AP) - A judge has granted a request for a temporary restraining order to stop the demolition of an historic building at the Arizona State Fair Grounds in Phoenix.

A hearing is scheduled for next week that could determine the fate of the art deco structure known as the Civic Building that was built in 1938.

It was constructed by the federal government as part of a New Deal-era program to lower unemployment by funding public-works projects during the Great Depression.

The building's uses over the years have included offices, a haunted house and a mineral and gem exhibit.

Arizona State Fair and Exposition officials say the building has a badly leaking roof, termite damage and a cracking foundation.

Supporters of preserving the building sought to delay the demolition until city leaders can find a better solution.
