Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon. He was born and educated in Manchester and was one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom. After graduation, he spent years working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia, but had a passion for oral surgery, which resulted in Dr. Drabu receiving his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is now the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his busy schedule to tutor and mentor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu was speaking about a recent article on a popular dentistry website. The full article, which was published on 4 July 2014, can be read here.

Tariq Drabu said, one hundred delegates attended the conference which was held in Mid Wales this year, titled 'The only way is ethics.' The conference discussed the ethical issues surrounding dentistry, including patients demanding cosmetic treatments over more serious treatments that were needed. This is a concern, as dental professionals our dedication should be to the patients oral health and not their looks.

Tariq Drabu in Manchester went on to say, modern glossy magazines and television celebrities are putting ideas into peoples heads of what is acceptable in terms of body image. People are so tied up on trying to look like their favourite celebrity that they dont concentrate on what is important, such as their overall oral health. As a dental professional it is my duty to ensure that my patients receive the best course of treatment before we consider any cosmetic treatments.

Tariq Drabu closed in saying, as dentists we have a duty to ourselves and our patients to uphold dentistry in the United Kingdom. The best way to achieve this is to put the oral health of the patient before any cosmetic requirements. We often have patients arriving at Langley Dental Practice for tooth whitening and other cosmetic procedures and we always ensure their teeth are in good condition before we start. This way any problems can be addressed quickly first before carrying out the cosmetic treatments requested.
