(CNN) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting a man in Florida has the first locally acquired case of chikungunya, the debilitating mosquito-borne virus.

Health officials say unlike others in the U.S. who have had the disease, in this case the man had not traveled outside the country recently.

The virus is not deadly, but it can be extremely painful, with arthritis-like symptoms lasting for weeks. According to the CDC, symptoms may include headache, joint swelling, muscle pain or a rash.

The disease does not usually result in death, but the symptoms are painful and can be disabling.

Chikungunya was originally identified in east Africa in the 1950s - but the CDC says about seven months ago it started showing up in the Caribbean.
