Former Gamecocks standout Sidney Rice retiring from NFL

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver and former Gamecocks standout Sidney Rice is retiring from the NFL, according to a report.

NBC's ProFootballTalk is reporting Rice is leaving the game due to a history of concussions.

Rice, a Gaffney native, was taken in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, but he didn't begin to shine on the field until the Vikings picked up former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

When Favre arrived in Minneapolis in 2009, Rice's numbers exploded as he became one of Favre's go-to deep threats. Rice would end the season with 1,312 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

Rice was then traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2011 where his numbers declined because of injuries. He was sidelined for most of the 2013 Super Bowl season because of a torn ACL.

As for his time at South Carolina, Rice snagged 142 passes for 2,233 yards and 23 touchdowns.
